HD Encryption Duration

HI,

I've recently dusted down my 2012 macbook pro and completely cleaned the hard drive and reinstalled the MacOS to start 'fresh'. However, I can't update the OS until the FileVault finishes the encryption.

This is taking a very long time, (geather than 6 hours) which I dont understand why as my hard drive is empty following the clean.

Any ideas? I have no need to actually encrypt the computer so if there was a way to cancel it I would be interested as to allow me to complete the OS update.

thanks

MacBook Pro 13", macOS 10.15

FileVault does "Whole" disk encryption. Free space is also encrypted. Every block of the disk is encrypted.

FileVault status can be obtained via an Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal session

fdesetup status

    FileVault is On.

Encryption in progress: Percent completed = 44.48

diskutil cs list | grep 'Conversion Progress'

    Conversion Progress:   44%

    Conversion Progress:   Optimizing 48%

Turn off FileVault encryption on Mac

When you turn off FileVault, encryption is turned off and the contents of your Mac are decrypted. The decrypting could take a while, depending on how much information you have stored. However, you can still use your Mac to do other tasks while the information is being decrypted.
