Startup disk

Hello everyone, I am using an Imac 2017 21.5", running Mojave 10.14.6.

I just cloned my boot disk and restarted from an external drive as I often did when using older Mac OSX older versions.

But to my surprise, whenever I accessed documents on the external disk, they would open applications FROM THE INTERNAL DRIVE, when they should open from the external Startup disk.

The same goes true with the Desktop : when it is selected from the Finder window lateral bar, it shows the internal drive Desktop, not the one on the Startup disk.

What did I missed ?

I've had this happen once or twice myself. I'm guessing it has something to do with the way macOS links work. I don't know if renaming one of the volumes would be enough to keep it from happening or not.
