I’m mildly surprised that El Capitan connects, though there’s always a trade-off between supporting permissive network connections, and supporting more secure connections.

What errors or diagnostics, what have you tried, what happened when you tried, which mail provider, etc?

Apple has tried to do that, and has tried to adapt the client configurations as the mail providers have evolved and changed the existing local configuration requirements, and has set up templates for major services, but there’s still site-local variations on how this stuff works. Mail itself itself is very old, and very creaky, and very much filled with spam, and where different clients and different servers are differently-compatible. Mostly. Usually. And then there’s Google, and Google sometimes just does their own unique thing and everybody else gets to deal.

TCP 143 would be unusual. 993 would be typical.
