Airplane mode and cellular data roaming

Under settings, when my iphone 8 is in airplane mode, the cellular settings on the main screen also says i am in airplane mode.... BUT data roaming is still on by default in the cellular settings tab. Will it actually roam for data?

Also, is there any way to restrict my phone to just cellular data roaming while in a foreign country? I have free data roaming but phone calls cost money. I want to be able to use google maps, etc.

Hello 1Elizabeth1.

Thanks for reaching out to Apple Support Communities.

I understand that you would like to know more about how cellular data as well as cellular roaming work. I will be glad to assist.

Airplane Mode turns off the wireless features on your device preventing any cellular data from being transmitted.

Please see the following for more information on AirPlane mode:

Use Airplane Mode on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple Watch

Additionally, take a look the information below from this resource:

Check the cellular data usage on your iPhone and iPad

"To turn cellular data on or off, go to Settings, then tap Cellular or Mobile Data. If you're using an iPad, you might see Settings > Cellular Data.

Depending on your carrier and device, you might have additional options listed under Cellular Data Options:

Turn Voice Roaming on or off: With CDMA networks, you can turn off Voice Roaming to avoid charges from using other carrier's networks."

Cheers.
