I have iphone 3G but updated to 4.0.1 and the sound issue happened to me. Remove SIM while phone on wait about 20 sec then turn phone off then wait 5 sec turn phone on then slide to unlock and insert SIM at home screen. This should solve the sound mystery.

I think turning your phone off then on fixed the problem more likely then taking the sim out and putting it back in

This *****... Just had this problem and couldn't get any sound except with the headphone. Please, if there is anyone who can solve this problem without going to the service centre please enlighten me. I have tried many ways both on and off this post but still it doesn't work.... Haiz... I am a first time apple user, must say that I don't really have a good impression of apple at this point in time... It's has only been two week and such problem arise!!

Hi there

I have a similar probem on my iPhone4 - both before and after installing OS5, so it's not that.

Ringer works with volume (tghe only sounds I can get out of it through the speaker)

Vibrate works

Headphones Work

Speaker DOESN"T WORK in Music/Itunes; Youtube; radio player etc

There are a few other factors/clues:

- On lock screen if I have keypad clicks it SOMETIMES clicks a few times then stops

- for about a day or two when this first started it kept saying "incompatible hardwear / unsupported hardwear" which I think might be because I used a different set of headphones (not Apple) but then again they have never caused me a problem before.

Did any of you get yours sorted? Any tips are most welcome! I have of course checked the mute button!!

Thanks

Julian

IVE FOUND THE SOLUTION!! This has been a problem for me for a while now!!

Anyhow.... Alot of replies on here said the make sure the headphone duct was clear of any dust or obstacles; HOWEVER, i found that aswell as that, i needed to clear the charger duct. Im not sure if there was dust in there too, but i found that blowing quite hard into the charger duct solved my problem. I tried many ways i saw on here, but found that the sound kept flicking on an off everytime i attached my charger. I blew into the duct to clear it and... WOL LAHHHH!!! Problem solved! I did also update my phone which apparently fixes any bugs, so hopefully i will not have this problem again!!

HOPE THIS HELPS GUYS! Let me kno :0)

DIRECTIONS FOR THIS FIX:

1) Jailbreak the iPhone (use Redsn0w for iPhone 3G, 3GS & 4 and iPad 1; use Absinthe for the iPhone 4S and iPad 2). For iOS 5.1 a tethered jailbreak is currently only available but that's good enough to perform this fix.

2) Download and install 'iExplorer' (link below). It's available for both Mac and PC

http://www.macroplant.com/iexplorer/

3) Connect iPhone to your PC/Mac and run iExplorer

4) Within iExplorer, on the left column navigate to System / Library / LaunchDaemons

5) Within the right column find 'com.apple.iapd.plist', right click then select delete

6) Close iExplorer and reboot the iPhone

7) Enjoy sounds again on your iPhone!
