notifications not working for only one contact

I have one contact that I no longe receive alerts/notifications for. The contact does not have "hide alerts" turned on. When I get a message from this person, not only do I not get notified, there is no indicator on the app that I have a new message. Since this is the person I message with the most, I really need to see notifications and get alerts.

Notifications work fine for everyone else. I've compared settings with other contacts and they are exactly the same.

I've tried rebooting my phone several times. The first time I did that, it worked and I started getting notifications for this contact, but then it stopped again. Now it's working intermittently.

What's going on? I have iPhone 7, running 13.3.1. The contact has iPhone SE.

Lets try something different-

  1. I know you said that you have rebooted your iPhone several times but have you done a➔ Force ReStart of your iPhone as instructed in the link?
  2. If the above was not successful then go to Settings➔Notifications➔Messages and turn Notifications OFF. Force ReStart your iPhone and then go back to Settings➔Notifications➔Messages and turn Notifications ON again.
  3. If the above was not successful then how about Deleting the contact completely from the Contacts App. Then do a Force ReStart and then add the contact again in the Contacts app.

I think I figured out what setting was wrong on my phone. Open Messages, find the sender in the list that you are not getting notification from, you will probably see a very small moon crescent to the left of their name. Touch and hold down (do not tap) the sender name and slide it to the left. That should fix it. You probably unintentionally changed it to Hide Alert when you tapped on that sender to open their messages or when you slid it to the left to delete that message. Moving fingers too fast sometimes has negative consequences.

  1. Force ReStart clears the RAM and any other internal commands that may be hung in execution while a normal OFF and ON (Soft Reboot) does not clear the RAM completely.
  2. Deleting the contact in the Contacts app does NOT clear the texts. The texts will remain as is and will only display the phone number after you delete the contact in the Contacts app. Once you add the contact back in the Contacts app then the number will be replaced with name as it once was.

Hi Mizcue,

Good thing is that it is working again. Bad thing is that it is inconsistent and requires your attention. I still recommend taking the steps noted above one by one and monitor to see if one of the methods solves this permanently. If you have already done so then let us know and we can work on other methods that the readers of this forum may come up with. Good Luck. BTW, nothing wrong in being obsessive and compulsive ... Ha!
