Apple Notes highlighting question

Hello all,

I have a quick question about the native notes app and PDFs. When using markup for a PDF in notes on my MacBook Pro, I can directly highlight the text (multiple lines at a time), but when I use markup on my iPad it is more of a drawing highlighter (as opposed to on the text directly). Is there a way to highlight the text directly on the iPad as I can do on my MacBook?
