Simply overtype the genre with the correct spelling in the same way that you did when you misspelled it.

If you see a genre listed in your iTunes Library with the wrong spelling, it means that at least one song has that mispelling. Genres are not listed in iTunes as a stand-alone "pick-from" list.

If you have a lot of songs with the same erroneous genre, use the Songs View, with the Column Browser showing Genres, select that genre:

Then select every song, click on Edit/Get Info (on the top bar menu) and edit them all at once. Make sure though, that you only change the genre, nothing else:

If you change anything that says "mixed" you will cause yourself no end of problems. Changing the Album title in my example would cause every one of those songs to then have the same album title, rather than the six different albums that you can see listed in the top picture.

Okay, lets go through the possibilities, one at a time:

  • I assume that you are trying to make these changes in iTunes, to the files in the iTunes Library - and not the copy on an iPod, iPhone or iPad. You cannot change the copy on the device, or at least, not without a lot of trouble. Once you make the change in iTunes, you can use Sync to copy that change to your iPod. (I hope you do use Sync, it's at times like these that Sync is essential)
  • you stated that you originally misspelled the genre in a couple of songs, which suggests that the songs are not write protected. However, you can check this in Windows File Manager. Go to the file itself (using File Manager, not iTunes) and right-click/look at the Properties of the file. On the General tab, if the Read Only flag is on (i.e. if the box is ticked), you cannot make changes to the genre in iTunes. Turn off the Read Only flag and then try again. In the example below, the song Melody Of Life, from the album Elegant Slumming (see the filepath) does not have the Read Only flag turned on.

  • the next thing to consider is that if you successfully manage to change the capitalisation (i.e. from Hard Rock to Hard rock), the old version (Hard Rock) may still be on the drop-down list of genres (see next screenshot):

  • If both versions are present, it means that at least one song in your Library still has that version as its genre. I noticed this song while researching for this post and changed it without issue. Once all songs have been changed, the alternative version will no longer be on the drop-down list:

  • And just for completeness, here's the Library view if that song before I changed the genre capitalisation:

I haven't bothered including a screenshot of the revised view, but you can rest assured that it's now the same as all the other songs.

I did also check on my iPod Touch. My 6th generation one doesn't mind about capitalisation of the genre. That rogue song was listed in the same genre as other songs on the album.
