iPhone unreachable/not connecting to laptop

Ever since I got my iPhone XR I have been having major issues trying to connect it to my PC laptop to transfer files (photos/videos).

When I plug the phone in, the ‘files’ box comes up and after some time the iPhone photos/videos become viewable and I can select them. Once I have highlighted the photos I want to put onto my laptop and dragged them into my laptop files, the transfer will start however I then get a pop up saying the the device is unreachable or not being detected and will stop the transfer.

I have tried 3 different usb cords (apple branded and non apple branded) and even 2 different laptops. I have also tried changing the "Transfer to Mac or PC." ”Keep Originals” / "Automatic." trick with no success. It is the phone as I have had other iPhones which have worked without issue.

I have had the phone since August last year and I just don’t know how to fix it, please help!

Import to your PC

You can import photos to your PC by connecting your device to your computer and using Windows Photos app:

  1. Make sure that you have the latest version of iTunes on your PC. Importing photos to your PC requires iTunes 12.5.1 or later.
  2. Connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to your PC with a USB cable.
  3. You might need to unlock your iOS device using your passcode.
  4. You might also see a prompt on the iOS device asking you to Trust This Computer. Tap Trust or Allow to continue.

Then, follow the steps in these Microsoft knowledge base articles to learn how to import photos to Windows Photos app:

When you import videos from your iOS device to your PC, some might be rotated incorrectly in Windows Photos app. You can add these videos to iTunes to play them in the correct orientation.

If you have iCloud Photos turned on, you need to download the original, full resolution versions of your photos to your iPhone before you import to your PC. Find out how.

Photos and videos that you sync from your computer to your iOS device using iTunes can't be imported back to your computer.

I JUST got off the phone with Apple support and there is a work around for new videos you can record, but it won't help for videos you've already created. (I also had the same issues and "Keep Originals" didn't work for me either as only the audio files would play with no video.)

Go into your settings

Go to camera

Go to formats

Make sure Most Compatible is checked (it defaults at High Efficiency)

Make a test video and try to transfer it. Mine worked like a charm and transferred pretty quickly with no issues. Playback was great as well and I didn't see any difference in video quality.

If anyone figures out a work around for videos already created, I would love to hear it.
