Menu bar icons invisible | Catalina

Hi all,

After updating to Catalina some of my third party apps are invisible or inverted in the menu bar. It looks like some of the icons (in Light mode) are meant to be for Dark mode. Some of them are totally invisible as you can see in the image, between the Citrix and Bluetooth app.

If i enable Dark mode everything is fine.

Does anyone have the same experience and know how to fix this?

Sorry for my late response!

I reset the SMC and the PRAM. That did't work for me either. The trick that Learoydouglas suggested (killall -KILL SystemUIServer) did the job for my other icons but not for the CC icon, as I find out.

Finally I reinstalled the CC Suite but with no succes. It was mostly the that icon that was doing wrong.

In the meantime I had some problems with inDesign as well. There were GPU like glitches that even adobe helpdesk can't fix. Since i am on a iMac from mid 2011 my Mac has a NVIDIA (CUDA) card that is not supported anymore. I was running In in some trouble with some other graphic programs to and it felt like the same glitches as the icons.

So I decided to downgrade to High Sierra where the CUDA driver are still supported.

I am not sure if the driver was the problem, but all is well now! The icons are good again and all adobe programs are running smooth.

So that's it for now. Thank you guys for the help!

Hey there Tim-Ny,

Thanks for taking the time to reach out here in Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you have third-party apps installed that seem to be greyed out in the menu bar after installing Catalina. Is that right? I’ll be happy to help.

Just to confirm, are you able to open and use the affected apps as expected?

Have you tried restarting your Mac to see if that helps? How to turn your Mac on or off

If so, you can also try testing the issue in and out of safe mode.

I would also recommend checking for any application updates that may be available.

If you’re unable to open the apps, reinstalling the apps to test would also be a good idea.

Take a look at the resources below.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Install and uninstall apps

Keep me updated on your findings.

Cheers!

Hello Tim-Ny!

Thanks for confirming those details. Reinstalling the affected apps is a great step to take in this case. Should the issue continue, you can also try resetting both the SMC and NVRAM to test as well. Take a look at the articles below.

How to reset the SMC of your Mac

Reset NVRAM or PRAM on your Mac

If you continue to run into this complication after giving these steps a try, reaching out to Apple Support directly would be a good idea.

Hi i_rina,

Thanks for the response, yes I can use the apps as i normally would and they are all up to date. I restarted the Mac with no succes. For the record, I did a clean install of Catalina and the problems appeared right away.

In the meantime I find something out. When clicking on one of the greyed out icons it becomes normal again. Then switching back to Dark mode, some of the icons are as they should be and as you can see in the image the Creative Cloud icon is inverted now.

I I think I installed the app (Creative Cloud) in dark mode, and it seems that the app is messing up his default light icon or something. So i think I need to reinstall the CC Suit.
