Why did the gray circle with the arrow in it appear in the top left corner of my iPhone. The very very top left corner

That is part of the photo that you are using for the wallpaper. If you were to change wallpaper it would disappear. If you wish to continue using that wallpaper, you will need to either edit out that point, or try expanding the zoom on the paper. If you look at the very bottom right corner of your screen, you will also see a small portion of the darker circle there that is part of the repeating pattern.
