IPAD and eID SMART CARD READER

Belgian official instances can be connected a.o. by our identitycard (bankcard size) and an eID smart card reader. These readers in general are USB fitted and are used by a computer or tablet. Can anybody tell me if connection can also be made via my IPAD 6th generation A1893, iOS 13.3.1? If so, what appropriate reader or what cable USB/lightning to use with a UBS reader?

thanks, Walter.

Despite recent advances in iPadOS and its capabilities, support for USB devices is still limited. Device support for external authentication devices is almost non-existent - although limited support has recently been introduced for FIDO2.

As such, it is very unlikely that you will be able to support the Smart Card Reader - unless you can find a compatible App for iOS/iPadOS that provides indirect support for the card reader.

With f.i. a MacBook Pro with at least OS X 10.6 and smart card reader (USB connector) we can handle all matters such as banking transactions and tax questions with the gouvernement. My MacBook is still OS 10.5.8 and I don’t want to upgrade. So I intend to use my iPad instead. Untill now nobody could answer the question if my iPad A1893, 6th generation, on iOS 13.3.1 is OK weather with an appropriate smart card reader (Lightning connector), or with a conventional reader (USB) + a USB to Lightning cable. Thanks for your interest, Walter
