installing an upgrade

I tried installing an upgraded os and now my mac says it could not be installed no packages were eligible for install contact manufacturer for assist. quit the installer to restart your computer and try again. when I do it brings me back to this same message. I just want to revert back to the old os i was using, it worked fine.

Try holding the Option key at startup and selecting Macintosh HD if available, but NOT "MacOS Base system", which is the Installer-system
