The separator bar is stuck at maximum, so there's no way to view an email without double-clicking and opening it individually. On hover, the bar's cursor changes shape as if to adjust its location, but won't budge off the maximum position. I have tried restarting the program and the computer several times. The problem sticks whether I am in Classic view or the mail-list-on-the-side view.

3 With the Go menu open, you'll notice that pressing and releasing Option will display or hide the Library choice in this menu.
4 Select Library from the Go menu (while holding down Option) to access the hidden folder.

Both methods worked. I was able to find the hidden Library folder and navigate down to locate the "windows.plist" file. I dragged that file onto the desktop.
I re-opened Mail, but don't see a tilde ~ anywhere in the Mail window. The separator bar is still stuck.
Next steps?
Thanks for that suggestion. I tried the Safe Boot startup, and the problem persists in that mode as well as the regular boot.
Any other suggestions?
Oh, no tilde in Mail, that was to help you find the hidden user's Library.
Did we get the right "windows.plist", there are several in different places!

Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode?
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.
I think I got the right one. I followed the path you laid out above.
Interesting thing, there's a new "windows.plist" file in the "com.apple.mail.SavedState" folder.
Better yet, the separator bar came loose. YAY!
Probably best to leave the new "windows.plist" file in the folder, and trash the older one that's on the desktop?
