Mac Mail troubleshoot

When you open Mac Mail and the window fills the screen and covers the desktop, how do you get the Mail app back to opening in a separate window on the desk top?

Cmd-ctrl-f to exit full screen. Or, move the cursor to the top of the screen and click the green button when it appears.
