Iphone unable to Update or Restore - says it is downloading software, how can you tell?

Hi guys,

Thank you in advance.

Running latest version of Catalina 10.15.3, My iphone XS Max (iOS 13.3.1) was utterly unresponsive this morning when switched on, so I turned it off and back on again and it has been stuck in this continual apple logo loop.

So I did the volume up/volume down - side bar, a lot of times to no avail, then finally got it to the update or restore screen.

I plugged it into my mac and then went to finder and chose to update the software, but the recovery screen kicks after 15 minutes (as in disappears from finder and the recovery screen reverts to the apple logo) and I'm not sure if the download is continuing. In seperate apple support they say "if the download takes more than 15 minutes and your device exits the recovery mode screen, let the download finish, then repeat [the volume up/volume down - side bar]" - but how do I know if the software is downloading???

If anyone has any tips or tricks to get the iphone working again, please share!!!

Please help!

Thanks

Like I said, I haven’t used iTunes to update devices in years, I back up and sync with iTunes but I updated over the air. If that dialog box went away, and I assume that it did, I’m pretty sure you should see the progress bar of the software download on the screen. Actually, you would have to see it or how would you know of it was downloading.

Have you tried rebooting your Mac, restart the phone and try again? Have you tried using a different cable?
