Dell S2719DC monitor - issues connecting my macbook pro 2020

Hi, I've just bought a new 15" macbook pro and I've had trouble connecting it to my Dell monitor - S2719DC - with the usb c cable. I had no trouble using the monitor with a hdmi cable on my old 2014 macbook pro. At the moment I can get the monitor to recognise the signal and show my desktop graphic but I it doesn't respond when I open up any other kind of file/programme. Has anyone else had this problem? Any suggestions on what I could try?

Thanks.
