Can I use my Apple Gift card to subcscribe to HBO?

Just bought an AppleTV, and want to subscribe to HBO Now.

I created a AppStore account, but it wants me to add a credit card, or PayPal as a payment method. Can I just use my Apple Gift card for now?

There are two kinds of Apple Gift Cards:

What type of gift card do I have? - Apple Support

The App Store & iTunes Gift Cards can be used to add balance to your Apple ID account, which in turn can be used for subscriptions. Account balance is always used before other payment methods.
Apple Store Gift Cards can be used in the Apple Online Store or Apple Retail store, but not for the App Store or iTunes Store.

I can follow a link in AppStore to 'Redeem a gift card' , but I want to know if I'll I be able to use this to pay for a subscription before I use up this card. Eg. After it is scanned, will the $100USD credit show as an additional payment method that I can use for m subscription?
