how are you able to use HDMI cable to reset your apple tv (3rd generation) with your computer

You wouldn't use HDMI for that. You would use an USB cable for that purpose.

The Apple TV (3rd generation) has a Micro-USB port just below the HDMI port.

Get an USB cable with a Micro-USB plug on one end, and whatever fits your computer (USB-A, USB-C, …) on the other end.

So I’d have to get a HDMI to USB as the back of my unit only has the HDMI and power port?
