Restore data from encrypted drive

Hi there,

I do have a 1TB External drive divided into 3 partitions (one backup 700 GB, one with a copy of "OS X El Capitan and a 300GB encrypted partition used as a normal external drive). Now, Yesterday I just put some stuff on to the 300 GB and a day after that is "today", I can't access it anymore! Hey I know how to handle an external drive and I definitely didn't do anything go... dam... wrong. Not even unplugging it even it was still mounted. and much more one can't do wrong.

The situation is, that the Disk Utility can see it, but it does not recognise it anymore as a drive.

I am very happy for any help.

Thx in advanced!!

Cheers Nik

If the partition is using HFS+ (aka MacOS Extended (Journaled) ), then you could try the paid app Disk Warrior to see if it can be repaired. I've had it restore access to many a drive over the years. Disk Warrior is the only app that can possibly repair the partition, but there are no guarantees here.

BTW, you should always have a backup of all your data regardless if it is stored on a built-in drive, an external drive, or on a network drive.

If Disk Warrior is unable to repair the partition/volume and since the volume is encrypted I'm not sure you have any other options but to contact a professional data recovery service such as Drive Savers or Ontrack. Both vendors provide free estimates and both vendors are recommended by Apple and other OEMs.

Obviously it did get disconnected related to the usb C connector which disconnects time by time because of "reasons"😖. And one of them is that the USB C standard invented a very loose connector, nice and very tiny 👍, but fails in reliability🤬. Well this may explain why it is damaged now🤯. But is there a way to fix it? 🙏🏻🤔

🤯😡😤😭🥺😩😣😖😫☹️🥵😱🤯😵🤕🤧😟😞

I am just very frustrated because I am not trying to save money so I (meanwhile hope) to get reliable and high quality stuff. I just not want to have 3 IT issues every week which I currently have since months...

And unfortunately most of it goes back to the USB-C Standard, which might not be implemented according to the specs. Neither on the MacBook nor on the cable provided by other vendors... or maybe the standard just failed. I do have a Lenovo at work, bought in 2019 and it just has the similar problems with the USB-C.

Sorry for crying around like a baby. But I feel better now... 😂🥳🌻🤩

Thanks for your responses. Haha 😂 Well yes, backup,... . Just never think that the drive will survive the next 5 minutes... seconds!! I actually tell this too every one else too and then I find my self getting that sloppy! And there we go.

Well, captain obvious just past by for a beer and we had a good time together. So my world is fixed again. 😜

Il try Disk Warrior. Thanks to you.

Cheers
