How to insert a hard space with Apple keyboard

There was a time when I could insert a hard space / non-breaking space using my Apple keyboard, but I can't seem to do that anymore. All my web searches indicate that the answer is 'Option + Space bar', but that doesn't work at all for me! Grateful for any advice, thanks!
