New IPad PRO 12.9in VS 3rd Gen IPad PRO 12.9in

Asking for HELP: I bought the iPad Pro (12.9 inch, 512GB, WiFi & cellular) less than 2 months ago from the apple store. Not a single person at the store warned me a new one would be coming out (mind you I’m not as into tech as I should be, so I didn’t even think to look up anything of that sort) and to wait. Should I try to sell mine since its basically brand new and get this one? Or does it really not make that big a difference? I looked online at trading it in and it says the trade in value for mine is LESS THAN 300 dollars which is insane to me considering I just purchased it for $2,000.

Unless you use it for work and NEED any of the new advancements (google the tech specs for each device for a point by point comparison), I’d suggest that you simply be happy with what you have.

In the world of tech there is always a new model coming out. Unless you are at a point in your life where you can buy a new ipad each and every year you’ll always be behind the curve. Even if you buy one now, there is always a chance that a new ipad will be released this fall.

As to the resale value, yeah buyers buy at a price that guarantees them a profit margin.

If you do choose to sell your current ipad and use the proceeds towards a new one you will probably do better to sell it yourself. You will still lose money. Think about it from your buyer’s POV, they will be looking for a bargain and if you are going to try to sell it for what you paid for it....well would you pay full price for a ‘used’ device? Even if that used is a couple of months.

If you do sell it be sure to wipe it correctly so you don’t sell someone a brick.

Whilst there has been much speculation in the technical media as to the anticipated release of a new model, Apple never pre-announce new products. As such, it is perhaps not surprising that Apple Store staff will not have warned you of an imminent new model. Even if they were themselves aware, they would not have been permitted to confirm details.

Trade-in values are always disappointing - with huge disparity between what you will have paid for a new device and its “value” for trade-in. If it is new, you will almost certainly achieve a better price with private sale - but it will still fall well short of what you may have paid.

As for capabilities of the newest iPad Pro, as compared with yours, there are some differences in the Camera (now a dual wide/normal pair) and the new addition of a new Lidar sensor. How important these are to you, only you can judge. In context of raw performance, unless comparing “raw” benchmark figures, you can expect “real life” performance to be broadly similar.

Chasing the “newest” and “fastest” is always an expensive proposition. If you can afford to do so, well, that’s entirely something for you to decide. In reality, there will always be something new on the horizon.

The iPad Pro that you have now will continue to offer excellent utility and performance for several years to come.

I sincerely hope this is helpful in providing some useful information and avenues for personal contemplation.
