16" Macbook does not work with Apple Cinema Display 23"

Hello,

I need to connect my New MacBook pro 2019 16" with an old Apple Cinema Display 23" with DVI connection. I tried 4 different usb-c to dvi adapter up to now but I still have problems: the external display is detected correctly but turns black after 5-6 seconds (not off but black). With one of the adapters it keeps turning on and off continuously every 5-6 sec!

I already reset the PRAM many times but nothing!

This is driving me insane, I can't believe I have to buy a new display!

Hello FRANCE5CO,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities for help with connecting your MacBook to an external display.

Are you using Apple adaptors? MacBook Pro specifications show: MacBook Pro 16 Specifications - Apple

"Video Support

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at millions of colors and:

  • Up to two displays with 6016‑by‑3384 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors
  • Up to four displays with 4096‑by‑2304 resolution at 60Hz at over a billion colors

Thunderbolt 3 digital video output

  • Native DisplayPort output over USB‑C
  • VGA, HDMI, DVI, and Thunderbolt 2 output supported using adapters (sold separately)"

Depending on your display input, try these adaptors, or one of the others listed in the article above:

USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter - Apple

USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter - Apple

Thanks and have a wonderful day.

Thank you PsyDye, but the Apple Cinema Display 23" only has DVI connection and none of the listed adapters has. I'm pretty sure Apple doesn't make thunderbolt to DVI adapters. I tried 4 different third party products up to now.

Something like this should support up to 4k resolution according to the specs and for the few seconds the display is on the image looks good:

Thanks
