I have OS X Yosemite 10.10.5, how can I upgrade?

I have an 11 inch mid 2013 Mac Book Air. I have over 100 GB free. I am trying to upgrade the OS. I appeared to have downloaded and installed El Capitan, and restarted my computer, but it still says it is running OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. I need to update this so I can work from home.
