Hi hotchoc,
generally you don't need any drivers for macOS. For example I'm using Samsung SE-S084 external DVD Writer thru USB connect on my Mini & I can even start from that unit with a MacOS Install DVD and install an OS from it (and of course burn CDs & DVDs).
All you usually need is a proper application- I'm using Toast.

hi david - nothing happens when i connect - i should have said that i need this hardware because my disk drive doesn't work on my mini and i was hoping that by buying this i would then be able to load a new os as all my apple applications that need internet access are not working and i am unable to load any updates

Nothing should happen when you connect the device. Unlike Windows, you don't get five dialog boxes bouncing and whining every time you connect something.

The question is, does the computer do anything when you insert a blank disc in the drive?

If the drive has native Mac support, the blank disc will show up on the desktop, accompanied by a dialog box that asks you to name the blank disc.
