FaceTime swiths my wifi to 4G when connected.

I just updated my iPhone XS to IOS13.4 and realised when I called someone via FaceTime through wifi, it would connect 4G after being connected (home wifi, no signal issue). It has never happened to me before. I have googled it and some people had this issue back to 2015 up to now. I wonder if there is a way to fix it? or is it iOS bug reoccurring?

Thank you very much.

Hi MINGUK,

Thanks for reaching out here in the Apple Support Communities. I understand that FaceTime is switching from your Wi-Fi connection and is using cellular data while on a call, and you'd like to keep it using Wi-Fi only.

I'm glad to help with this.

If it's switching to cellular data, you can disable this feature by going to Settings > Cellular. In the list for Cellular Data, find FaceTime and disable cellular data for it.

This explains more: View or change cellular settings on iPhone

Take Care.

Hi Ryane77,

First of all, thank for your respond, as you can see from my profile, I am new to forum here, and I did not mean to click SOLVED button, and it seems forum will not let me revert it back.

In your suggestion. It does not total resolve my phone problem. As if I need to make FaceTime call while I am on 4G, I will have to manually switch cellular data on for FaceTime again.

It used to be connected via the connection I am on, rather than switching itself without asking. As you are a community specialist, can you tell me if this issue has been reported to firmware team?

Regards

Hi MINGUK,

Since this is happening on your home Wi-Fi, it would be good to isolate a little more to see if the issue is with how your iPhone is connecting to that network, or with the iPhone itself.

I suggest you test this on one or two completely different Wi-Fi networks to see if FaceTime stays connected to Wi-Fi or if it always reverts to 4G.

Report back with what you discover with this test.

All the Best!

Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your help.

Its home wifi, Router has not been changed, nor upgraded (firmware), the only thing changed was my phone firmware. I did not notice connection issue with previous iOSs.

However, I did another test today. I was calling my partner's iPhone which its connected to the same network. i was watching my phone while i was calling. once our FaceTime is connected. my wifi switched to 4g, then back to wifi again, it was less than two seconds between these changes. wifi to 4g to wifi again. after that, I disconnected and conducted 2 more test calls with same condition. wifi was remained when FaceTime connected on second and third test.

FaceTime swiths my wifi to 4G when connected.
