Catalina and migrating iphoto

Hello. In 2015 I began using apple photo's, but never migrated my iphotos over. I've just upgraded to Catalina and don't see the iphotos there anymore, under pictures. When I click on the icon it's asking my if I want to switch to iphoto library - is it safe to do this? I just want to be able to access my photos and move them over to apple photo if iphoto is no longer being supported. How do I do this? Thanks.
