FCPX import bug causes low disk space: Imports from Photos App Do Not "Leave files in place"

Hi,

My import preferences are set to "Leave files in place". When I drag and drop media from the Photos sidebar in FCPX, I expect it to only optimize and proxy my selections. Yet for some reason, it's importing the originals as well. Is this a bug? I'll run out of disk space at this rate!

As I said it might appear to take more space. The OS uses hard links for duplicate files so only one is stored on the drive. The files will both show their actual size in different locations even when there is only one file on the drive.

No. The application will not access files from the Photos library bundle. Best solution is not to import video into Photos, but to import it directly into FCP from the camera and store it wherever you want. You most probably don’t need either optimized or proxy video with those files. You can always create those files later if you need them.

If the FCP library and the Photos library are on the same drive and the files are identical, duplicating the files will not use more drive space even if it appears to. However, importing into Photos and then importing into FCP may produce different files because of the way the applications handle the media, which can be different. Of course the optimized files will take a huge amount of space, as they’re high data rate ProRes files.

That's not true. Original Media is taking up 28.03GB. System Information/Storage shows a size increase.

It just makes more sense if FCPX can symlink to the media in Photos app.
