Distribute Apps

I manage our District devices in our School District. We have adopted an MDM (JAMF) for our iPads, however, we have not added the dozen iMacs that we have in our Film Program. I have recently found out that the Film program director has just been loading a single copy of Final cut on all of the student machines and using his one account... I don't want to add the iMacs to the MDM at this point, but I am not sure how to purchase final cut using Apple School Manager without the licenses going to the MDM... is it possible to leverage volume licensing without the licenses going through the MDM?

You can purchase the licenses through the Volume Purchase Program and choose codes as your distribution type. You can then use those codes individually in the iMacs.

You can publish apps using VPP within Apple School Manager, you don't need to add it to the MDM. Although I recommend using an MDM for app publishing as well as management. There are many alternatives in the market that offer Apple MDM such as Scalefusion that you can use for iMacs, if you find using Jamf complex or expensive.

You should be able to do it the ASM. This is the business portal, but the functionality is the same: (edit: I'm having issues uploading the screenshot right now. I'll try in a little while).

hmmm thanks - I went to try the other VPP site and it redirected me to ASM... I am tempted to just submit the order, but I would hate to spend 2400$ to find that I can't access the software because it wants to push them through the MDM :)

unfortunately that doesn't show up for me... I finally heard back from JAMF and they said I would need to purchase them some other way other than ASM... except that is the only option that I am aware of for purchasing apps.... now that they have removed my access to the traditional VPP store

I tried to do that in Apple School Manager but it only gives me a drop down of where to assign the licenses but no option for codes... do I have to go through the old VPP store?

This is what I see:

It could be that you're in Canada that you don't see this option. If you could get the devices enrolled in Jamf, I would recommend it.

hmmm could be Canada... more likely that is school vs business... thank you very much this has been incredibly helpful. I will likely work on getting them enrolled in jamf.

When you select the app in the Apps and Books section, on the righthand side of the screen, under "Buy Licenses," you should see a field for "License Type" that says "Managed." Clicking on that should bring up a dropdown with a choice of "Managed" and "Redemption Codes." You won't see the license type option on free apps.
