Mac OS 10.15.4: Random restarts due to panic(cpu 1 caller

My MacBook is restarting randomly from last few days with following error messages:

  1. "BAD MAGIC! (flag set in iBoot panic header)" (freezes, need to restart manually, 5-6 times a day)
  2. panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffff00df677b4): x86 CPU CATERR detected (automatic restart)
  3. panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffff025f05f64): "void AppleEmbeddedPCIeUpLinkMgmt: (automatic restart)

In all three cases, only safari was open with background services (Creative Cloud and OneDrive only). Nothing installed recently.

Can someone please explain the reason for these panics, logs are as follows:

I have similar issues and I can say, that it never appear when I am doing something. The hard shutdown and panic error only appear when I will leave my macbook pro 15" mid 2019 running, with no sleep settings. But when the CPU is computing something and the fans go loud, then everything is OK. When the CPU is not occupied and fans are quiet, then something goes overheat inside and the CPU get hard shutdown. It must be the T2 chip issue related. And it must be also somehow related that I am using 3 Thunderbolt monitors connected. The issue appears since the Catalina OS upgrade. Almost every day when I am going for lunch I came back and the laptop is shut down due the cpu panic.

May 20, 2020 8:29 AM in response to BinnX1

The same issue happens for me - 16" MacBook Pro, 6-core i7, 16GB RAM, 10.15.4. Applications open at the time always include Xcode and Android Studio, along with Safari, email and a few terminal windows. There are days where it will happen 3-4x. It's _very_ frustrating especially when Apple plays their usual silent act, and is one of the several reasons I refuse to update to Catalina on my other Macs until Apple fixes this PoS.

May 21, 2020 2:44 PM in response to BinnX1

Same thing has happened to me. 16" 2019 MBP 32GB, 1TB. Apple Support has suggested reinstalling Mac OS, booting in Safe Mode, and the typical nvram and smc reset or whatever its called. Still doing the issue. I really hope this gets fixed because I run my business with their products and I'm losing a lot of faith with their support. Took 10 months for them to fix my Home Kit issue. Its crazy.

May 28, 2020 6:47 AM in response to Karipides

No it doesn't fix this for me at least. I think the connection of a NAS, which for some reason has trouble being ejected at shutdown is the culpret for me, which has persisted through two different imacs and from Mojave to catalina, and for two different Synology NAS units. Something in the way Apple handles the remote storage . . Anyway a hang in Mojave has turneded in to an error reprot after reboot or startup on catalina. harmless, but very annoying...

May 28, 2020 7:43 AM in response to Karipides

Upgraded to macOS 10.15.5 yesterday, hoped it was going to fix my CPU panic issues on PowerState (sleep), BUT IT DID NOT. SAME CPU PANIC. Again, I have a Lacie 2Big Dock 8TB drive which I use for docking and storage, bought from Apple store - ideally this is not the issue, but if it is, it's sold on Apple's website so FIX YOUR SH*T APPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hello guys,

I have got update about my unexpected shut downs of Mac. I installed via Boot Camp Windows to my MacBook Pro 16" on a disk partition.

Since I thought this issue is related to software, I expected Windows will run smooth without this issue.

Unfortunatelly, under heavy graphic load (External monitor or video gaming), Windows behaves same as MacOS do, which leads me to presumption, that this issue we are experiencing is more related to hardware, specifically the graphic card. This presumption supports the fact, that this behavior doesn't happened on my MacBook Pro 13" 2019 with the same MacOS version, which doesn't have AMD Radeon Pro 5300M 4 GB but just integrated Intel graphic card.

As far as I am concerned, the conclusion seems to be to switch to new generation od MacBook Pro 16", which we might get in the Fall, where this issue (hopefully) will be fixed.

Let me know, if anybody can confirm this presumption.

Jun 10, 2020 2:05 AM in response to Hands0me

I've got the issue on my macbook pro 13 inch late 2018 for months now, so the graphics switching is not the problem.

First thought external display was the problem, but it happens also without anything connected.

Mostly with video calls, but also without.

At first it seemed to only happen with sleeping (in/out) connected to the external monitor; which the errors did for the whole past year. Don't know exactly when, but could be from the first Catalina on.

Tweaked those sleep settings and then disciplined with decoupling external display.

But now it starts happening at other moments, with other log messages and doing different stuf.

Super random and had multiple types of panic messages...

So I don't know at this point, but working from home and having this 2 / 3 times a day is not nice.

Owh, and I upgraded to 10.15.5 two days ago and didn't help a thing.

Audio is doing weird things after the upgrade even, automatically switching audio output from cable headphones to my external display at random without putting it back when I change selection.

I hope this will be fixed soon, because it's horrible

I was having this same issue and I too was as frustrated as you are. After a few long calls with Apple Support advisors, I think we fixed the issue. Not only did they run half a dozen tests and collect data from various tests, they also showed me how to reinstall MacOs. After reinstalling MacOs, nothing has changed on my laptop and none of my data is gone. The ONLY change is that my laptop has not kernel panicked, yet. Maybe this solved the issue... I can guarantee my graphics are not the issue because I have been stressing the graphics card pretty harshly for days and my laptop has not kernel panicked even once.

Jun 22, 2020 1:46 AM in response to forgetfulfrank

Hey fellow MacBook user,

of course. Let me know if you have any more questions. I would recommend this route as it has reduced my issues.

one thing I’d like to add is that I was editing a simple Word Doc a few days ago and it just had some tables in it. Nothing hard. The next thing I knew, my laptop froze AGAIN. Nothing was working except the power button. After a restart, which caused the same kernel panic message, I was confronted by a later version of the Doc. Turns out, my laptop had not loaded the past 9mins of edits that I had made in the Doc.

At this point, I am so mad that I just stay away from using my laptop. This issue is getting out of hand and I am gonna have to contact Apple Support for the 6th TIME. Grrrrr.
