Mac OS 10.15.4: Random restarts due to panic(cpu 1 caller

My MacBook is restarting randomly from last few days with following error messages:

  1. "BAD MAGIC! (flag set in iBoot panic header)" (freezes, need to restart manually, 5-6 times a day)
  2. panic(cpu 1 caller 0xfffffff00df677b4): x86 CPU CATERR detected (automatic restart)
  3. panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffff025f05f64): "void AppleEmbeddedPCIeUpLinkMgmt: (automatic restart)

In all three cases, only safari was open with background services (Creative Cloud and OneDrive only). Nothing installed recently.

Can someone please explain the reason for these panics, logs are as follows:

Hello

i have had 2 new 16” MBP since March 2020 both had random freeze/restart. Yes, like you it happened when I was doing nothing special on Word, just typing. And lastest update not saved. But also happened while in Safari and other programs. No rhyme or reason.

i returned both for full refund.

maybe next year I will try again. Meanwhile I have a MB Air

It’s really unfortunate that you came across this issue with 2 separate MacBook Pro’s. I’m just gonna see what the Apple care advisors say, at this point. It’s funny that no Apple advisors give a crap to help out in this discussion. I really shouldn’t blow thousands on a laptop just to avoid using it. We’ll see. I’ll keep y'all updated with the latest info.

I definitely agree that reinstalling MacOs fixes the issue to a certain point. At this point, I’m just going to hope that MacOs Big Sur will fix all of my issues. I don’t know when it will come out, but I know that it is going to be an important update. I love how it looks and that change will be enough for me to be willing to open my laptop again. I have AVOIDED using my MacBook Pro for weeks and that update will change that. Time to play the waiting game. Lol.

I have also three external displays connected. From time to time the restart only happen when I am not working at all. And the cooling fans are at low rpm. When there is some CPU consuming process and the Cooling fans are loud, than the restart never occurs. I have a suspicion that it is related to the fact, there is some overheating happening and the fans are not going to spin faster to cool down the CPU. And somehow with the external displays it is connected also. And because of that the fans are controlled by the T2 chip, the issue must be in there.

I have the 15" 2019 mid MacbookPro.

Same here. Happened today. Closed the lid and when I came back an hour later my Mac had restarted.

Jun 27, 2020 11:53 PM in response to raghunathr

Quick update from me. Since I have split USB devices and my 3 monitors (connected by a docking station) as well as putting the dock including charging the crashes have almost stopped. Before I had 2-3 a day now I had 1 in the last 8-10 weeks. I still don’t put my Mac to sleep and shutdown and startup in the morning and so far it works really well. I know it is sad to say this as this should just work but maybe you guys try to use both sides of the Mac for your devices and split video and USB from each other.

So dock including charging for my monitors to the right and USB devices extended with a USB hub to the left. No idea why but it helped a lot!

Jun 29, 2020 7:27 AM in response to Guido Hagemann

Just an update on this issue from my perspective and final fix.

16" MacBook Pro with latest OS. Many reboots per week as others have noted.

I tried many of the suggestions here with reseting components, reinstalling the OS, etc, etc. None of which had a lasting effect. Finally got a ticket open with Apple through my company. Laptop spent 4 days at a local Apple authorized shop. They ran hardware diagnostics for 4 days and found nothing. Returned to me still randomly rebooting.

Then I had to ship the laptop back to my company IT group where they forwarded it to the local Apple repair facility in St Louis. After a week or so it appears that Apple replaced the system board and returned the laptop. Two weeks since and no reboots.

This definitely seems like an issue with the hardware on the 16" MacBook Pro anyway. Getting someone to do something about it seems to be the hardest part of the repair process.

Jun 29, 2020 9:59 AM in response to BinnX1

Having this same issue on my new 16" Macbook Pro. Most of the time I just get a hard crash to a white screen with no error code. I've also had "Bad Magic" and just had "panic(cpu 0 caller 0xfffffff0142153dc): x86 CPU CATERR detected". This happens pretty much every day with no obvious cause. The last crash was waking up the laptop from sleep with nothing running but three tabs in chrome.

Should I take my laptop in?

Jun 30, 2020 10:57 PM in response to BinnX1

Happened again today after a wipe and clean install so I can confirm that reinstalling OS is not a fix. I'm on Catalina 10.15.5

Hi, I reinstalled MacOs Catalina (via cmd+R) and restored the original font system file with font book. I don't know if this is the cause of the problem but I have a lot of fonts installed on my computer and when I tried to validate them via Font Book it freeze/fan/restart (like 3 times a day). no more restart since, I'll let you know if the problem reappears.

Jul 6, 2020 9:49 AM in response to BinnX1

I've had this problem for a few months on my work laptop, even before I upgraded to Catalina. One thing I noticed is that the screen would freeze for a bit, and then before the reboot the fans would go super high for a few seconds and then reboot. I started to wonder if it wasn't a hardware issue of some sort.

Long story short, my company sent me a new laptop, same model, same year, and I used my TimeMachine backup. The problem no longer occurs. I'm left with the realization that it must be a hardware issue.
