I have this same problem on my Macbook pro 15" mid 2012. Some keys do not work intermittently. Is this likely to be a software issue or hardware. Mostly all is fine but from time to time this happens. Then after a while (sometimes by turning off and on again) it rights itself again
Sorry but I haven't noticed if its specific keys. Just that when typing I sometimes have to go back and put in missing letters (I haven't noticed numbers being a problem). Unfortunately I cannot check as it all seems to be working fine at the moment. Is it worth trying the software fix you mention and see if it happens again?
Any progress?
What exactly does not work??

What keys exactly?? if 789uiojkl it's an easy software fix. Otherwise more likely hardware.
You should start your own posting.
