iPhone backup not working - "session could not be started" error

Ever since I upgraded my phone (3GS) to OS4, backup in iTunes has stopped working. The error message is:

"iTunes could not back up the iPhone "XXXX" because a session could not be started with the iPhone"

I have seen this error in other threads, and have tried the fixes suggested, including:
- checking permissions on the backup directory
- deleting old backups via iTunes prefs
- deleting old backups manually (by deleting the folder)
- hard reset

... but none of these work. Everything is fully updated (OSX, iTunes, iPhone) to the latest versions.

Any suggestions? Thanks.

My backups have worked fine after updating to iOS 4.0.1 and iTunes 9.2.1 ... up until today. I have an iPhone 3GS and am getting the "session could not be started" error. I haven’t done anything particularly odd on the phone though I have updated a few apps since my last backup, done a lot of SMS and a few calls, taken some photos, and sent an MMS (this last is rare for me).

In ~/Library/Logs/DeviceLink/AppleMobileBackup.00.log, I see:

2010-08-06 14:50:25.338|AppleMobileBackup|262:39694336|SocketStreamHandler.c:_SocketLogCal lback| ERROR: SocketRecv (data): return of 0 bytes
2010-08-06 14:50:25.391|AppleMobileBackup|262:39694336|StreamHandler.c:_ReadFunc| ERROR: Error reading data: Can't read data
2010-08-06 14:50:25.391|AppleMobileBackup|262:39694336|DeviceLinkConnection.c:_DLCheckVers ionForConnect| ERROR: Could not receive message: '(null)'
2010-08-06 14:50:25.392|AppleMobileBackup|262:39694336|SocketStreamHandler.c:_SocketLogCal lback| ERROR: SocketSend (data): error 32: Broken pipe

Presumably this indicates that the software on the phone has got a problem, but it’s not obvious from these logs where the problem is.

I was able to resolve this (on a Macintosh system) by removing my old backup, and then removing all of the files found in the two folders

~/Library/Lockdown/

and

/var/db/lockdown/

This allowed me to both back up my phone again, and upgrade to 4.0.2.

I think it basically causes the phone to forget about the computer and treat it as a new one, at least for the purposes of backing up.

I found this on Apple's site: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766 there is an article here telling you where to find your backups. I have this problem too; I couldn't back up or update so I did a restore to new and it updated. It didn't recognise that there was a backup there so it wouldn't restore and it still won't backup even though it has done an update.

I'm having the huge issue of my iPhone 3Gs failing to be backed up by iTunes. I know how to remove my old backup, but where do I find the following files so I can remove them?

~/Library/Lockdown/

~ is unix-speak for your "home" directory (ie. the folder named after your login name, should be the top of the "places" folder list in a Finder window), and you will be able to find and delete the files from contained in the library/lockdown subdirectory via a Finder window as normal.

/var is a different story ... you will need to dig into the terminal as it is hidden from the Finder. Pull up a terminal window (in Applications/Utilities or just spotlight "terminal") and then type in the following:

cd /var/db/lockdown/
rm *

... quit the terminal app and you're done!

I have the same error message. Have been able to back up my 32gig 3GS on a separate Macbook. The only difference seems to be that I downloaded 4.02 software for the iphone on my problem computer, Macbook pro and not on the Macbook, otherwise they are both running all the latest software. I have tried trashing and reinstalling iTunes (recommended by applecare) and throwing away my saved prior backups of this phone. Nothing has worked yet. I'm a little nervous about throwing away files in terminal. What are the lockdown files?

Thanks
