2 Apple IDs with 1 phone number - can I deregister the number with one ID while preserving the other?

I have two devices: an iPhone and an iPad. I also have two Apple IDs that were both originally created on the iPhone.

My iPhone is used for work, and my iPad is for my personal use. So, I would like to deregister the phone number associated with my personal Apple ID, but continue to use that phone number with my work Apple ID.

How can I do this?

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 11

Thanks! I didn't realize that both ID's were signed in for iMessages and FaceTime on my iPhone. I was able to sign out of my personal account on those apps and successfully edit my personal Apple ID on the iPad.

If they are 2 separate IDs, you should be able to do that. When attempting to remove the number from the personal ID, you may have to sign out of Messages/FaceTime if signed in with the personal ID.
