Some files (newly copied files or other) on external HDD not showing up in finder

I copied few files to my external hdd. While copying the greyed out icons showing the progress bar was visible. After copying was done, it suddenly disappeared. Right in front of my eye :P.

I tried several remedies as follows,

  1. Repair using 'Disk Utility -> First Aid'
    1. First showed unable to unmount error.
    2. Then when I did it again, it completed but showed no errors.
  2. Plug into a windows pc and then back to the mac
    1. The files were visible on windows. No issues.
    2. The files weren't visible on the mac.
  3. Run 'chkdsk' utility in windows
    1. No issues were found.

Finally what worked for me was, restarting the mac.

I would suggest anyone with the above issue to first do what I did last. Good luck.
