Final Cut Pro X Crashing

Hi, so whenever I open up final cut and navigate round an open project or even zoom in on a project (any project not just a particular one) it just crashes. Tried to delete preferences, reinstall the app, create new libraries, EVERYTHING. Tried to use iMovie as a backup for editing and it does the exact same thing on there too. Looked everywhere and tried everything and there's nothing I could find on this, please help!

If you have a Time Machine backup or an installer from and older system it can be done. Make sure you have all your current files backed up. If possible use a clone like Carbon Copy Cloner. You can then rebuild the OS and migrate your documents from the clone.

I don’t see any obvious red flags in the report.

Two things you can try:

a) run Etrecheck with Full Disk Access and also select to show what the unsigned files are, and post the new report.

b) try FCP X from a new admin account and see if it also crashes.

This will tell us if the problem is specific to your account (which at this point seems likely).

I understood from Tom Wolsky that you also using the OWC soft raid, I tried starting a new project on a different drive (G-tech Raid 5) and since then FCP works great not a single problem, I know its only about 2 hours but when I worked on that OWC drive it would happen sometimes after 5 minutes.

I really think the problem has something to do with the new os and the Softraid which I anyway really dont like.

Hey guys,

Having the same problem, with both FCPX and iMovie. Installed, reinstalled, used external drives, internal one, NAS — same behaviour.

The thing is that last week I've edited a bunch of videos and FCPX worked flawlessly, so it must be something quite recent.

I've read on other forums that Adobe Premiere also started crashing, so this might be related to the OpenGL support in Catalina being faded out.

The thing is that literally thousands of editors rely on FCPX to do their work, especially in these troubled times — and if this issue is not fixed in a timely manner, many will be forced to switch to Windows (those who are Adobe users mainly).

Can anyone else confirm that both iMovie and Premiere behave the same way?
