Apple AirPods pro freezing iPhone XR when connected

My son just got the air pods pro for his birthday today. When we try to connect them to Bluetooth, once connected, it freezes his whole phone. If he puts them back in the case, his phone goes back to normal. Everything we’ve tried so far has not helped.
