I recently bought a new iMac and updated it to Catalina. When I try to open an .rtfd file I created with TextEdit a few years ago on iMac OS X Lion, it says it can't open the document. I checked permissions and it says I do have permission.
How can I get this document to open on my new iMac?

Can you view the .rtfd in Quick Look (click the document in the Finder, followed by the space bar), or open it in Pages v8.2.1?
If you can open it in Pages v8.2.1, then simply export it to another filename on your Desktop as RTFD, and then see if TextEdit can open that new file.
Documents made with TextEdit from Lion may not be compatible with the new TextEdit. Try opening the document with a different editor.
How are you opening the document? Are you double-clicking on the document or using the Open under TextEdit's File menu? Try using the latter.
