How to fix "Airpods Connection Failed" on a MacBook Pro running macOS Mojave ver. 10.14.3

I can't connect these Gen 1 AirPods if my life depended on it. :-(

I've tried resetting the airpods.

They connect A-okay to my Samsung s10 and my wife's iphone 11.

Gremlin on my MacBooc, get out!!!

MacBook Pro 15", macOS 10.14

The AirPods seem to connect for a split second as can be seen in the screenshot below, but then reverts back to "Connection rejected" within 1-2 seconds.
