The version with a "No" symbol through it would be Office 2011 or older. Those cannot run in Catalina, nor can any other 32 bit software. It's all dead.
Office 365 works, as you can see. But did you pay for the subscription service and login? Until you do, it only operates as demo software and will not save files.

so what can I do
I have Office 365 from my real estate work, but when I use Word I cannot do anything with it, it will not allow me to make changes or save it in my own documents
It say Mac will not allow it
word will open only now in Office 365 no more in my Microsoft Word i purchased when I got the Mac there is a forbidden sign through it
But the Word from 365 it doesn't allow me to make changes on a Mac or save it to my documents
What version of Office are you using? If it's 2011 or older, those apps won't work in Catalina. Neither will any other 32 bit software.
installed Catalina earlier Word documents won't open
That's not as clear as it reads. I can open Word documents I have from the ancient MS-DOS version.
Do you mean Word itself won't open?
Thank you, Kurt. At least I know now!
Helen
Thank you. I'm really glad to have this way to get help. The document I want to open is really old so I think it is now gone as I'm not willing to subscribe
Thank you, I think it's gone for good. At least it's helpful to know. I shall try asking the sender of the original document to convert it into Adobe and send it again and see how we get on
