Well 10.13.6 is as far as a 2010 iMac will go. Assuming the computer works okay now and is in top condition it should be just fine. IMHO you should be looking to replace the computer, it's 11+ years old and FAR FAR FAR past it's prime.
I'm running High Sierra on a mid-2010 iMac right now. Its a very stable system, actually an optimized version of Sierra. You should be fine.
I ran El Capitan on two older Mac Pros (2008 and 2010) with zero issues.
You can find negative comments about every single product on the planet. Doesn't mean none of them are true, but they rarely affect more than a small percentage of users.
If for no other reason, you should upgrade the OS to get as many security fixes as possible.
I too ran with the latest OS always on my mid-2010 iMac that it would run, until I upgraded last April / May. It always ran without issues for me.
Just a warning if and when you upgrade your computer and end up with Catalina or later as the OS X:
32 bit apps will do not work with Catalina and future operating systems. That will force you to upgrade a number of apps which, in itself, can be very costly. To see which of your much used apps will have to be replaced in that scenario download and run the free GO64. It will show you which apps are 32 bit and will need to be replaced. Then you can add that to your budget. Good luck.
Believe me, I know. $$$ is currently the issue with a '11 MBP that also has to be replaced. If I can upgrade, it'll help keep things moving along for a while longer.
The iMac works great except there are signs that the video card amy be going (occasional flashing pixels).
I read in a lot of places that HS causes overheating and frequent shutdowns... Was this isolated and addressed or is it random?
I always recommend beginning to save when you buy a new computer for it's replacement. That was it's much less financial pain when it time 6-10 years down the road. If you get paid every 2 weeks and can save $2.75 from each paycheck in 10 years you have over $3000 saved. This is much much easier than coming up with $3000 in 10 years.
Another option is if you have decent credit is that Apple will provide up to 18 months of interest free financing.
Interesting idea ! Kinda like what banks did when I was a kid (many decades ago), they had what they called "Christmas Clubs" where kids could open an account and save a portion of their allowance every week for their Christmas gift purchases. Don't think I ever heard of one running 10 yrs though. But still... point taken.
That's a great idea... If only I was smart enough :)
Thank you.
Thank you, everyone... I appreciate your time.
I'll back it up and go for it.
Be well.
Cheers.
You are definitely smart enough, the question is can you muscle a little discipline in yourself?
I lost 26 cents in that scheme!
Good point...Thank you.
That's the robber barons for ya !
