iPhone for Italy?

All US Apple Stores are closed as well. Has your cousin checked to see if he can purchase one online, just as you could here in the US? Be advised that while the phone will likely work if you order a fully unlocked iPhone and pay for it up front, it will not have any warranty in Italy and would have to be shipped back to you in the US for you to take to Apple for service even when Apple stores in Italy or around the world reopen. Of course given how hard hit Italy has been from this pandemic, perhaps even ordering online isn't possible? But he should check.

Whatever you do, DO NOT consider buying for a cellular provider or Best Buy and ship the phone to Italy. It will be carrier locked. Only Apple sells unlocked phones and then only if purchased by paying in full up front.

While the phone may work, it would need to be unlocked. In the US, the only retailer that sells unlocked iPhones is Apple. At this time all Apple stores in the US are closed. You may be able to order online, but your cousin could also order online in Italy.
