"Hide alerts" not working with group messages/watch

Using iPhone 8 and Series 3 Apple Watch if that makes any difference.

On group threads, I find that even though I enable "hide alerts" on the phone, I'm still getting the notifications on my Watch, which is extremely annoying to have group threads blowing up my wrist every 30 seconds -- that's why I want to turn off the thread. However, the functionality does not seem to be working. I have seen suggestions online regarding global do not disturb, etc, but why do I need to turn off all notifications to get this feature to work? Am I missing something?

I had the same problem. You have to silence it on both iPhone and Apple Watch. In the Messages app on Apple Watch, find the thread you want to silence, swipe right and tap the DND icon. And that’ll take care of it.

Good afternoon kaydem91,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand you are having an issue with Hide Alerts not working on your Apple Watch for group texts. Since there was an update to iOS 13.4 and watchOS 6.2 released March 24, I would suggest updating your iPhone first. Then restart your iPhone and update watchOS. Turn on Hide Alerts on your iPhone, and toggle Mirror iPhone off and then on for your Apple Watch. Here are a few resources to help you with this.

Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Notifications on your Apple Watch

"Your Apple Watch notifications mirror your iPhone settings, but you can customize the settings for each app.

Customize your notification settings

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, then tap the My Watch tab.
  2. Tap Notifications.
  3. Tap an app. Different apps have different options. To use the same notification settings on your Apple Watch and iPhone, tap Mirror my iPhone. Some apps allow you to customize your notifications. When you customize, you can choose from these options:
    • Allow Notifications: Notifications appear in Notification Center and your Apple Watch alerts you.
    • Send to Notification Center: Notifications are sent directly to Notification Center without your Apple Watch alerting you.
    • Notifications Off: The app sends no notifications.

If you customize an app's notifications, you can also group notifications from that app. Tap Notification grouping, then choose an option: Off, Automatically, or By app.

If you can't customize an app, you can still turn off its notifications. Scroll down to the Mirror iPhone Alerts From section and turn off the setting next to the app."

Take care.
