Kernel Panic on 16" i9 MBPwRD

My MacBook Pro is having a kernel panic about three times a week when in sleep mode. I received this MBP in early Feb with 10.15.3 so I decided to wait for 10.15.4 to see if that corrected the issue yet this is the second time it has happened since the latest update.

Hardware config:

I have a 2019 16" i9 MBPwRD w/ 64GB of RAM and an Intel UHD Graphics 630 and an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics card. Sometimes I'm connected to my Thunderbolt dock, other times my USB C dock when mobile and today it happened with only my Apple provided USB C power cable attached. I don't see a pattern in the hardware and the error message seems to be connected to the internal hardware.

Here is the error:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff801ae16487): "AppleIntelFramebuffer::setPowerState(0xffffff86afd6a000 : 0xffffff7f9e3c5d88, 1 -> 0) timed out after 45970 ms"@/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-6153.101.6/iokit/Kernel/IOServicePM.cpp:5296

Had the same problem, solved it 4 days ago.

Status here

My GPU Panic sleep problem is still solved. I have since installed my video-rendering tools, my developer tools, all my other stuff.

My energy saving stuff is back to normal.

Having it gooing to sleep on power, on batteries no problems so far.

Running 10.15.4

Solution for me was

My brand new macbook pro 16 (Shipped 2. april 2020) also restarted (crashed) over nigth - actually it crashed (Kernel Panic GPU) everytime it went to sleep mode. I had nothing installed except default OSX with updates.

Solution details

  1. Reset: Pram & NVRAM (still crashed)
  2. Reset: SMC (still crashed)
  3. Internet Recovery Command+Option+R (when booting) (Crashed under installation, but continued afterwards)
  4. Disabled "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off." & "PowerNap.." in Energy Saver settings (Problems disappeared)
  5. Two days later I enabled "Prevent computer from sleeping...." and "Powernap..." again (Still no problems)

I don't know if step 1-3 is necessary, but I think so.

So a macbook pro 16 that I almost returned, is now working perfectly - and I'm very happy:-)

Supplemental update released today... Doesn't explicitly mention this issue; closest sounding plausibility is:

Resolves an issue where a USB-C port in your Mac may become unresponsive

I've never had a USB-C peripheral despite countless crashes, but the fix mentions the *port*. But that's a huge stretch given the panic is during the sleep phase setting the power state of the Intel GPU. Anyway, here's hoping this is resolved!

Very good point on the feedback, thank you for mentioning! I should have mentioned in my last post that just because I received acknowledgement of this bug, it’s still important to open a support case — ideally one that results in an RTA (that is, escalated to engineering).

That said, support is likely to require you to jump through some extremely time consuming (and pointless) hoops before they’ll open an RTA, and I know most people don’t have the time to waste... Regardless, sending feedback is a very good way to help light a fire, and it’s quick!

As others have stated, this is definitely a software/firmware/BridgeOS bug that we have to wait for Apple to fix and release. None of the suggested work-arounds helped my MBP 16,1 either. Unfortunately the only solution I’ve found is to revert to 10.15.3, but that’s not feasible for me (and I wouldn’t recommend it for anybody, given there was at least one RCE security exploit in 10.15.3).

For what it’s worth, after 20 days with Apple support, I finally received another reply stating engineering is still investigating this bug. I’m not sure why anybody at Apple would suggest a hardware replacement instead of escalating to engineering first, but for what it’s worth, I just received the following response from Apple regarding the kernel panic in AppleIntelFramebuffer::setPowerState():

Thanks for your patience. I have received a response from our engineering team. This issue is still under investigation. It is recommended to stay up to date with the latest Firmware and Software for your Mac. If I receive any additional updates I will contact you directly. Thanks for all your time and efforts to help get this issue resolved.

Sorry I don’t have any solutions (aside from never letting your laptop sleep), but hope this is of some help. Best of luck to everybody!

I finally replaced my MBP16 through apple store.

With replacement, I changed my thunderbolt3 dock from Belkin Thunderbolt3 dock pro to Caldigit TS3 pro.

Now in my setting (connecting two monitors in a dock, using MBP16 in clamshell mode), no kernel panic happens again.

I don’t know it was my macbook or belkin’s dock making trouble, but now I’m sure something happened there.

I am sorry to hear that. The same thing happened to me 2 days after I bought a new MacBook Pro (for a lot money). I think there is also a much higher chance it will happen if you are on a new device because iCloud and everything else is synced during the night. I disabled powernap and I haven't seen the crash since then - but that's probably also because iCloud is now synced and I don't move that much data around.

May 22, 2020 4:48 AM in response to SidGP

@SidGP, headkit: That’s a very helpful datapoint — thanks much! Similarly, I found that I could reliably reproduce this bug by repairing my iCloud-synced photo library, which re-sync’s every photo with iCloud servers. I’m not sure if other iCloud services cause the same crash (e.g. iCloud Drive), but I suspected the cause was a sync service that runs during power nap; most like;y one that utilizes a GPU...

I suspect much of this work is done by BridgeOS on the T2 chip during power nap (vs. a macOS background process) to minimize power consumption, but there’s very little public info on BridgeOS, so I could be totally off base... Also, IIRC, the only iMac with the T2 chip is the iMac Pro, so perhaps the root cause is just another bug in iCloud photos sync. I hit a horrific iCloud photo sync bug in either the first Catalina release or iOS 13, which resulted in me permanently losing >1k photos (of ~13k) on all of my devices on 10/12/19. My RTAs related to this incident are still open, and as of 10.15.4, a clean sync from iCloud still results in corrupt image metadata for another ~3k photos... But I digress.

I haven’t had a chance to confirm 10.15.5 fixes this bug myself, but others have reported success with versions >= beta 4 (though I personally recommend waiting for the GM release if possible)... Anyway, thanks for your input and kind words — most of the progress I’ve made researching this issue is thanks to the many users who provided invaluable information in this thread — you guys deserve most of the credit!

My MBP 16 with 32G started crashing after upgrading to 10.15.5 a week ago. It had been working fine for months on 10.15.3 or 10.15.2 I believe. Resting SMS and Turning off power NAP didn't help.

The only workaround works for me now is keeping the lid open and turning mirrored display brightness to zero. I have an external monitor connected via USB-C->DVI, so I had kept lid closed before this issue.

Hi. Thought I'd share here too, there are a few similar threads. I've been experiencing the kernal panic from sleep issue from 10.15.4 onward on my 16" MBP bought in February. Was onto apple support with no solution found (tried all the resets, clean reinstallations, eliminating external monitors, 3rd party software etc).

Then found the disable powernap "solution" with 10.15.4, which worked just fine.

Made the mistake of upgrading to 10.15.5 and the problem got worse, kp'ing from sleep every single time.

Today I installed the supplementary update (I keep hoping they'll solve the issue) and now it sleeps and wakes fine, so long as it isn't plugged into my external monitor (Dell U2715H). When plugged into the monitor it KPs during sleep every time, though the time it takes to KP varies (I hear it whoosh).

Have tried resetting the SMC again, switching off various power save options, none making any difference right now. I guess it's just a case of waiting for more updates to solve this.

I installed 10.15.6 this morning and so far so good, no panics/crashes yet. Not like I've done excessive testing but it used to happen every time I put the system to sleep while plugged into an external monitor (in 10.15.5, with power nap off) and it's successfully slept and woken a few times today without issue.

Really hoping this is solved now but will report back if I get any more issues.
