Kernel Panic on 16" i9 MBPwRD

My MacBook Pro is having a kernel panic about three times a week when in sleep mode. I received this MBP in early Feb with 10.15.3 so I decided to wait for 10.15.4 to see if that corrected the issue yet this is the second time it has happened since the latest update.

Hardware config:

I have a 2019 16" i9 MBPwRD w/ 64GB of RAM and an Intel UHD Graphics 630 and an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M graphics card. Sometimes I'm connected to my Thunderbolt dock, other times my USB C dock when mobile and today it happened with only my Apple provided USB C power cable attached. I don't see a pattern in the hardware and the error message seems to be connected to the internal hardware.

Here is the error:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff801ae16487): "AppleIntelFramebuffer::setPowerState(0xffffff86afd6a000 : 0xffffff7f9e3c5d88, 1 -> 0) timed out after 45970 ms"@/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-6153.101.6/iokit/Kernel/IOServicePM.cpp:5296

I have the same issue for weeks now with met 5K UltraFine LG display, crashes after everysleep. I tried clean install, no backups and the same issue.

Do any here have also problems with bluetooth? My Apple Bleutooth keyboard, mouse (logitech) and Apple Magic 2 trackpad as also a lot of issues. They told me today to go to the service center for a replacement or repair.... But i still think this is a software issue.

I finally replaced my MBP16 through apple store.

With replacement, I changed my thunderbolt3 dock from Belkin Thunderbolt3 dock pro to Caldigit TS3 pro.

Now in my setting (connecting two monitors in a dock, using MBP16 in clamshell mode), no kernel panic happens again.

I don’t know it was my macbook or belkin’s dock making trouble, but now I’m sure something happened there.

I am having this problem on the MacBook Pro I received two days ago. It happens overnight when the laptop is closed.

32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4

I am turning off power nap per some of these suggestions, but the crash happened whether I was connected to a larger display or not. I would close the laptop and next morning it "restarted because of a problem" and the error report contained much the same info: Beginning of my crash report:

panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff8002816487): "AppleIntelFramebuffer::setPowerState(0xffffff834aa53000 : 0xffffff7f85dbcd88, 1 -> 0) timed out after 45963 ms"@/AppleInternal/BuildRoot/Library/Caches/com.apple.xbs/Sources/xnu/xnu-6153.101.6/iokit/Kernel/IOServicePM.cpp:5296

I am replying in hopes Apple will fix this problem. I paid a lot for a souped up MacBook Pro to replace my 2014(?...don't have it in front of me) model, which worked, but couldn't be upgraded to Catalina. I'm wondering if it was a mistake to get the new MBP. Bit discouraged...I have only had this machine for two days and it has crashed every night since I got it!

I am sorry to hear that. The same thing happened to me 2 days after I bought a new MacBook Pro (for a lot money). I think there is also a much higher chance it will happen if you are on a new device because iCloud and everything else is synced during the night. I disabled powernap and I haven't seen the crash since then - but that's probably also because iCloud is now synced and I don't move that much data around.

Has anyone who consistently has this problem tried the Catalina 10.15.5 beta? It's cured at least one problem for me, waking up an external display from sleep (I used to have to unplug it and plug it back in 75% of the time I tried to wake it). That issue was introduced in .4 I believe, and it gave me hope that it fixed this one too (which I had a while ago, but haven't repeated in quite some time).

Also the title of this thread is about the i9 MBP 16, has anyone with a different model seen it?

Cautiously optimistic. I've had this issue since I bought this Macbook a month ago. I was getting it 2-3 times in a 24 hour period. I've turned off Powernap and have gone about 18 hours without a kernel panic.

Had another kernel panic this morning when waking from sleep with power nap off though it happens way less often with power nap off so it is a partial solution. Apple has been working with a couple of people in this thread but no solution yet it seems.

Agreed — looks like disabling power nap significantly reduces the frequency of crashes while transitioning between sleep states, but I still get a crash every week or so.

I still have a Feedback Assistant case open that *seemed* to have some momentum; I collected verbose logging and gave steps to reproduce the bug, but I haven’t heard anything since April 24th. I’ve asked them and AppleCare for updates, and for them to publicly disclose this known issue, but the silence is deafening...

May 20, 2020 8:14 PM in response to Sc1972

This should be the ultimate solution, as has been confirmed by another blog: https://medium.com/@canartuc/kernel-panics-in-new-macbook-pro-16-solution-is-here-2ac1d88fada7.

Also, there's no need to reset neither NVRAM/SMC with this bug. Not only because they won't be able to solve the problem permanently, but also because they might make things more complex, sometimes bring you new errors...

May 20, 2020 9:01 PM in response to Vonstrovsky

@Vonstrovsky: I don’t mean to offend, but I wanted to point out there are quite a few factual errors in that article. Nothing indicates a power design or GPU switching issue — the screenshot “proving” it just points to the word panic (an old term for an unrecoverable OS error), and the fact that the Radeon kext was loaded at the time. Nothing indicates that kext was actually in use at the time of the crash). The author’s description of how GPUs work in general (and with external displays) appears incorrect; not really sure what to make of it. Apologies if that sounds harsh; just trying help mitigate misinformation.

There’s a great write up of this bug on the Mr. Macintosh blog (mentioned previously in this thread): https://mrmacintosh.com/10-15-4-update-wake-from-sleep-kernel-panic-in-16-mbpro-2019/

The author provides a great (and accurate) description of the bug, and keeps the article updated (it was just updated 2 days ago to note this bug appears to be fixed in the latest 10.15.5 beta). I’ve found other articles on that site very informative; the author(s?) seems very proficient, eloquent and motivated to help others. It’s rare to find that level of quality on a blog, IMHO.

HTH!

May 21, 2020 6:10 PM in response to vrtx0

Vrtx0, I know NOTHING about how or why my iMac works, so I won't be of any help to anyone regarding this issue. However, upon reading this particular entry of yours, I remembered that my symptoms didn't commence immediately upon upgrading to 10.15.4, but a few weeks afterwards when I turned on iCloud Photos on my iMac to sync my photos in iCloud to my iMac. Up to that point, my machine was working perfectly. Just thought I'd pass that info along to you. Thanks for all the research you've performed and info you've provided to all of us here in this discussion.
