Apple wired keyboard not working after upgrade to 10.15.4

My 2015 MacBook Pro no longer recognizes my Apple Wired USB Extended Keyboard after upgrading to Catalina 10.15.4.

But the weird (and maddening) thing is that if I plug a USB hub into my MacBook and then plug the keyboard into the hub, it works.

I have restarted several times and reset the NVRAM and SMC. Nothing has worked.

The good news is that my keyboard started working again after the next update! So the problem resolved itself. Until your next update, perhaps you can try running your keyboard through a USB hub, that worked for me. Or if you have another non Apple keyboard, try that.

As for computers slowing down after updates, I feel your pain. My 2015 MacBook Pro was getting really bogged down last month after a couple of updates, but has improved a bit since then. Sometimes the slow down is caused by programs updating in the background. Photos is notorious for taking days to update its database in the background and can cause everything else to grind to a halt. And the inevitable march of progress means that as operating systems continue to get more competent and more complicated, they "outgrow" old hardware. I really don't think it's planned obsolescence, just over excited computer engineers forgetting the rest of us don't have the latest Mac Pro.

Funny, this post would have appeared days earlier, but Apple's support forums failed!

My usb extended keyboard stopped working after installing the most recent update to 10.15.4 It worked before the install. Restarted and it doesn’t work. It isn’t the port as the ports in the keyboard itself work with a usb mouse.

It’s an upgrade issue. I contacted support and was told to call an Apple Authorized service provider to see if they could fix it. Costs more than a new keyboard. I love the older keyboard because the keys are just a bit more elevated.

Funny; didn’t a new keyboard come out recently?

Software issue, not a hardware issue. I think it‘s planned obsolescence; just like what happens to the older Macs. One day they just slow so much that you HAVE to buy a new one because the update made it too slow to function. First time I’ve had a keyboard software issue.

Who knows how many Macs I’ve had since 1987. Every single one suddenly got slow upon starting after an update. Planned obsolescence is the Apple way. Bummer.

It only works when plugged into the hub, which I would not otherwise need to use. So I would rather not use the hub if I don't have to as that as caused problems in the past.

I'd rather not reinstall the update if I don't have too as that took about an hour, or maybe more.

Suit yourself, makes no difference to me if you choose to resolve the issue or not.
