How do you set preferences to show the Full Website Address in Safari on the Mac?

How do you set preferences to show the Full Website Address in Safari on the Mac? I have gone to preferences, clicked the advance tab, checked the "show full website address" box, and closed the preference window. NOTHING! do I have to reboot the co mputer? Nothing seems to work. Thank you.

iMac 27", macOS 10.15

Yes, I would first try a re-boot, something I always do when something odd happens. If this doesn't help try deleting Safari´s cache files: Safari > Preferences > Advanced, and then check "Show Developer Menu" at the bottom. Now in this new menu select "Delete cache files". Then re-boot again and test. You could also try booting into Safe Mode:
