iTunes stuck on "Welcome to your new iphone"

When cruft builds up with application data, I have successfully wiped my iphone 6s and restored from a backup.

This time, iTunes still isn't finding the restored software on the iphone. I can't get past the option to "Set up as new iphone" or "restore from backup".

Neither are appropriate because I've gone through these steps.

Now I'm unable to get itunes 12.8.2.3 on OS X 10.12.6 to update its software, or manage this phone through itunes which is holding my backups.

Searched forums, didn't find one that applied, sam

Hello Sam,

Thanks for that info and for choosing the Apple Support Communities. If I understand correctly, you are connecting your iPhone and Mac, and being asked to setup as new or from a backup. Since you restored your iPhone, iTunes is acting like this is the first time you're connecting the iPhone and Mac, this sounds like the Mac wants to apply settings and content from the iPhone from before you restored the software. If you don't want to do this, you can choose the setup as new option, and you will still have your backup in iCloud of your current personal data. Here are some Apple resources for more about this:

Use the Finder to sync your iPhone, iPad, or iPod with your computer

Cheers!

Thanks for posting. First, I'm not using icloud backup for my iphone. Sorry if that was not clear.

Your steps sound like what I've done twice before.

A) Usually when you mount iphone in iTunes you'll see the iphone icon when clicked you can manage it. It was from this view that I selected Restore. I cannot get back to that view anymore so I cannot verify the exact terms. But the option to essentially wipe it as a new iphone.

1) Wipes, iphone, installs current IOS, reboots iphone, mounts iphone in iTunes which displays the "Welcome to iPhone" view.

2) From here I select the backup I want.

3) "Restore in progress", rebuilds using the backup I selected, reboots iPhone.

Instead of seeing view A), I see "Welcome to iPhone".

B) Figuring I've missed a step, I select "set up as new iPhone" which runs through steps 1-3.

Instead of seeing view A), I see "Welcome to iPhone".

Repeated B) which runs through steps 1-3.

Repeated B) which runs through steps 1-3.

Posted here because three times is prompting me to ask here for ideas.

I've not had this happen before because I always got to A). Except now, I'm stuck on B).

What am I overlooking? thx, sam
