Using Smart Keyboard wig iPad pro

I have had an iPad Pro for a few years with a Smart Keyboard but I can never get the keyboard to work! Every now and again it will, but I can;t find any routes to get rid of the on screen keyboard that pops up the minute I want to type something. I just want to use the Smart Keyboard. It’s driving me nuts! There must be a simple way?
