Spam Group FaceTime Calls with over 32 members

Starting around 2 am this morning I began receiving group facetime calls from a mix of numbers in my contacts and random numbers I didn't have saved. Since then I've received about 7 more calls throughout the day. The calls only ring once or twice before ending. What's even more interesting is that, after going back through the numbers involved in the calls in the "recents" tab of the facetime app, there were more than the 32 total people involved with the highest being 59. The reason I think this happened is that every number was repeated once or twice. This is obviously pretty odd, and I would brush it off as spam or a prank but the fact that the same numbers were registered as being in the same call multiple times and that this caused there to be over the 32 person limit makes me think this is more than that. Anyone else have this issue or know anything about it?

You might want to consider removing your cell # from FaceTime settings but leave your Apple ID as a method of your contacts can reach you on FaceTime by entering your Apple ID. This was recommended by a senior Apple tech. My 80 year old mom is having the same thing happen to her. Apple recommends un-checking your phone number under FaceTime settings "where you can be reached" and this should stop the unwanted FaceTime group calls.

The Apple senior advisor also said to leave Feedback to Apple on what needs to be changed on FaceTime per this link:

I think I’ve got your answer, I’ve read almost every thread and people either get this or a wall with paintings.

IP addresses are public locations, which could be one reason, but they normally lead to only very brief areas, like just a middle of a country, a state, a town, or in my case a street.

If not this, I have been getting these calls all from my area code, which could mean someone found me in a phone book.

If still not this, go onto a website called “I have been pwned” and type in your email, it could be a data breach, this happened just a few days after my email was affected in a large breach.

If not this, it could be a result of the fact you can actually find fairly precise coordinates in an image on say snapchat, whatsapp, discord, my recommendation for this is to turn off the Camera setting for these apps.

We don’t know much but with the surge of large data breaches this year it could be a result— you should also turn off FT for the time being and block the numbers.

This happened to me last night around 1AM. I actually sleep with earbuds in, listening to relaxing sounds through my iPad, and I was woken up by a FaceTime call coming in. I figured it was just someone dialing wrong, but then it wouldn’t stop. After it started ringing a third time, I forced myself to wake up enough to figure out that the heck was going on. I realized they were group calls and immediately started blocking numbers, but every time I got one blocked, a new number would appear. It got up to 12 people on the call by the time I finally just deactivated FaceTime and turned on Do Not Disturb on both my iPad and my phone. I asked around on social media to see if anyone else I knew may have ever had the same problem, and the only real answer I got was that it could be related to a TikTok trend. I poked around a little on TikTok this morning (I have it downloaded but have never really used it) and sure enough, there are several videos that all seem to have been made in the last few days of groups of kids/teens prank calling random numbers on FaceTime just to see if anyone picks up and reacts in a funny enough way for them to post. Super annoying, but I’m hoping that’s all this is! The one thing that weirds me out though, is yesterday morning, I got a bunch of spam calls from different numbers, though all in my state (NJ) in rapid succession, and two of them actually managed to leave voicemails with almost identical clicking sounds. No idea if there’s any relation between the two things but it’s definitely creepy. I really want to write it off as a TikTok prank but the weird calls earlier in the day and the persistence of the FaceTime calls really makes me wonder. I wish someone had a real answer!

This just happened to me last night. I got a FaceTime call with 11 numbers included at around midnight. I set my phone on airplane mode to ignore the calls but I also received a text with just a period symbol on it “.” That was all it had. When I woke up the next day I turned off airplane mode then received that Group FaceTime call almost immediately after. I blocked all 11 numbers and have not received any calls since. I never answered the calls but they would have been calling over and over like crazy if I didn’t set my phone on airplane mode. Blocking the numbers helps if y’all need a way out of these annoying calls.

Happening to me, I was planning on going to sleep and I got a facetime call from 4 numbers I don’t have a contact for, all from my area code. At first the time obvious was it was one of the group chats I participate in for school that I don’t have most of the numbers added for and they like to send facetime calls a lot, but then after looking closely I realized these numbers have no connections to me anywhere.

I ended up just blocking them all and it stopped as well as texting a few people asking if they had similar experiences, none have had one.

I haven’t picked up since it’s around 1 AM and I figure if it’s a call center or something of the sort I best just block them all to let my family sleep

This started happening to me this. Someone texted the group to ask who it was. One of the numbers said they and a friend were fooling around doing a tik tok prank. I removed myself from the chat. This has happened at least 10 more times with new numbers. Apparently 2 people choose random numbers and FaceTime. I’ve spend the last half hour “blocking” all of the numbers in each Group FaceTime. I’ve had 3 random new numbers since. It’s unbelievably annoying and I cannot believe there is no way but to turn off FaceTime on ALL of my devices to get this to stop. Gotta love Tik Tok. So glad it’s making so many people “happy.”

I cannot speak for everyone else’s experience but 2 of the people involved in the 1st call admitted starting. They proceeded to ask the others if they would follow them on Tik Tok. When my 14 yo daughter heard what was happening, she confirmed that kids are actually doing this. Her words “prank” to merry new people. And with the pandemic I know for a fact some of these kids are up way late into the night. And trust me, it was very unsettling to me when they continued to do this at least 10 more times.

This just happened to me. Repeatedly over the last few hours. A different group each time, but I noticed two numbers were always in the group. All other numbers were changing with each group. Finally, I answered and kept my thumb over my camera. There were two people. One man and one woman. They didn’t seem to know each other. I did not recognized them. They primarily kept their faces out of view and I heard the woman say, “Yo! This is weird” the she laughed. A third person quickly popped in then hung up. All other numbers remained ringing in small different color boxes on the screen.

It seemed like those who answered were just as clueless I was; as if they too were getting random FaceTime group calls. The two numbers that kept reappearing in all group calls never answered. The people who did answer were from different numbers. After hanging up.

The strangest part is that I could not end the call. There was no option to end the call. Given that I didn’t want to be seen and had to keep my thumb on the camera, my gestures were limited, but none of the usually screen taps or swiping worked. I had to turn the phone away from me than power it completely off. It seemed like the only way to end the call. I turned the phone back on and kept it on airplane as I blocked each number in each group. The groups contained 3-5 people, except for the one I answered. That contained 18.
